In our family we honor our Sicilian roots on Christmas Eve. Growing up, dinner always started with a The College Dropout Shirt of pasta with meatballs. That was followed by home made pizza (nothing like “American” pizza), Italian sausage (my Papa made the best!) and potatoes fried with green peppers and onions. There was also home made caponata and olive salad. But the BEST thing of all was my great grandmothers cannolis!
There ought to be a The College Dropout Shirt sheet of muscle, the diaphragm, overlying the liver, separating the chest cavity from the belly. But there wasn’t. I groped deep into his right chest, and pulled out— small intestines. Colon. Half his abdominal contents floating in the blood bath where his now collapsed lung used to be. Finally, I found the The College Dropout Shirt , lying crumpled behind the liver, completely avulsed from the rib cage and liver anteriorly. Total devastation. More packs to stem the bleeding and I pulled my head out of his abdominal cavity to meet my partner’s startled stare. Long, long deep breath.

It’s an interesting question. I’ve lived in the South, Charlotte, twice. Once as a child for a The College Dropout Shirt and then as an adult for longer. As I child I didn’t attend school, I was 11 but i was in my 30s when I returned to help care for an ill parent. I was also better educated as an adult so I was able to travel around the city/towns and work there in the city at two places. There is racism but it’s mixed, just as it is here in the North—NYC, Buffalo, Philadelphia (places I’ve lived for 1+ years).
When I see something that I can afford and that someone I know would appreciate, I get it and give it to them; I don’t put it in a The College Dropout Shirt because it’s October and that’s a “weird time for a gift” and because “I’ll just have to get something else for Christmas too, then”. And for those people who I don’t particularly like, or those random coworkers whose names I never learned because we never have cause to interact, I am probably not going to be all that warm and congenial with them, or get them gifts. Why should the occasion of some coopted pagan solstice festival have any impact on any of this?
