When I was a very young kid in the early 1980s, my mom took me see an unexpectedly strange Grinch admit it now working at Dollar General shirt at a local elementary school. This would have been in Cornwall, Pennsylvania (although I’ve always been under the impression that this was some kind of touring lecture). I can’t remember much about the presentation, except that it made a vaguely disturbing impression and we left early. Ostensibly, it was a program for kids about Halloween. I was a huge fan of monsters, so it seemed right up my alley. While I don’t remember anything the speaker said, I recall being puzzled that he didn’t seem to be speaking about Halloween at all.
As the fox tried to remove its hook Mary saw a Grinch admit it now working at Dollar General shirt nearby and reached towards it, grasping it in her hand she smashed it over the fox’s head causing it to recoil off of her and knocked something off of its body. Mary looked over at the object as the fox regained its composure from the blunt hit, it was a round black disk with a red light that flickered on and off before dying from damage sustained. The fox started to… flicker? Like a failing TV screen static draped overs its body as it started to shrink more and more before going to the size of an adult. In the place of the fox stood a woman with dark brown hair with rainbow highlights, Mary couldn’t see her face due to her hands clutching her bleeding forehead, Mary could hear the woman muttering swears as she wiped a bit of blood from her forehead.

Some neopagans gripe about the commercialization of Halloween Grinch admit it now working at Dollar General shirt but I don’t care. I’ve always loved Halloween, not just as a neopagan but as a darkly-inclined person. It’s the only time of year when it’s socially acceptable to have skeletons on your front lawn! It’s the only time of year when the whole world (okay, not the whole world, but quite a bit of it) chooses to acknowledge the darker things in life! What’s not to love about that? The fact that such a thing even exists lightens my heart. Everyone’s spooky for a day! YAY! I can find spooky decorations for my room in party stores! YAY! Excuse to wear costumes!
It’s related to the late winter festival cycle. According to pagan beliefs, the winter was a time of evil, so the Kukeri had the Grinch admit it now working at Dollar General shirt to chase away everything evil the winter represented with their scary masques. Therefore it’s not a counterpart of Halloween. It’s rather related to the traditions that came to be associated with the Lent, even though there is no sanctioned carnival tradition in the Orthodox Church. The Lent celebrations, like Kukeri or jumping over fires, were and are very much frowned upon by the Church. The only similarity to Halloween are the scary masques.
