I couldn’t just sit around and watch them for, so I mixed up some Sav a Chick electrolytes and started slowly and gently re-hydrating them with Minnesota Mosquito State Bird Shirt (I got really good at doing that with these 3 babies). It took 5 full days, but they all eventually started eating and drinking. they’re semi-permanently housed in my living room. They’ve been doing absolutely great the last week or so, even growing substantially and learning how to fly out of their box to torment my dog who is terrified of them.
I read the gnats are supposedly short lived, but I am absolutely panicked that I’ll need to re home them somewhere where there are no gnats. I’ve tried to take them outside for short bits, but the minute we get outside, we are swarmed. I’ve tried EVERYTHING. Yard treatments, chemicals, smoke, citronella, horse fly spray, fans, only going out in the wind, home remedies. Everything. I think they are actually starting to learn that outside = pain. They instantly stampede as soon as the gnats get wind of them. Hell, the gnats are so bad less than 1/3 of my garden is planted, and it’s mid June! These bugs don’t do mercy on anything with blood.
